What is Runescape, Runescape 2 and Runescape Classic?
Runescape is a massively multi-player online role-playing game (MMORPG) by Jagex Ltd. It was fist released in January 2001 by brothers Andrew and Paul Gower. This version was 2D but a newer 3D version, initially called Runescape 2, was released in March 2004.
The original 2D version is still available for old, veteran players. It was referred to as RS1 but it is now called Runescape Classic or RSC. The current version is simply called Runescape. So all articles or blog posts that refer to “Runescape” or “RS” refer to the current, updated version while the old 2D game is called RSC or RS1.
Runescape is the number one MMORPG in the world. Its free-to-play, no download model makes it very easy for people to get into the game.
In fact it is so popular among the younger school-age demographic that some school libraries actually try to get teens to visit them by offering a Runescape club on weekends.
One of the amazing things about this is that Jagex barely does any paid advertising. If you search for “best browser MMORPG” on Google you will see that a lot of companies advertise their game – but not Jagex. RS has always attracted new players simply by word of mouth.
Most Popular Game
What makes RS the top browser MMO game? The numbers say it all. Did you know that game has been recognized as the most popular free MMORPG by Guinness World Records?
From the runescape.com website, here is the official infographic that gives the relevant numbers and interesting statistics about RS players.
